Oral care ingredients

Mouth serves as one of the primary barriers between our body and the external environment. Maintaining a healthy mouth not only impacts overall well-being by preventing the entry of harmful microorganisms but also significantly contributes to improving one's perception of personal image. For these reasons, oral care products become essential elements within the daily personal care routine.

What are and how do cosmetic ingredients for oral care work?

Ingredients used in oral care are formulated to preserve the health of the mouth, teeth, and gums. These ingredients go beyond simple cleaning, as they address issues such as plaque, bad breath, and dental sensitivity.

Some of the most common functions of these ingredients are:

Antibacterial action: Many oral care ingredients have antibacterial properties, combating bacteria responsible for plaque and cavities.

Teeth whitening: Some components contribute to teeth whitening, removing stains and restoring the natural brightness of teeth.

Enamel strengthening: These ingredients promote dental enamel strengthening, reducing sensitivity and protecting against erosion.

Bad breath control: Some ingredients help control bad breath by eliminating bacteria that cause unpleasant odors.

Gum problem prevention: Ingredients help prevent gum problems by keeping them healthy and free from inflammation.

Dental desensitization: Some ingredients act as desensitizing agents, relieving dental sensitivity to cold or hot foods.

Saliva stimulation: Some components promote saliva flow, which is important for neutralizing acids and maintaining a healthy balance in the mouth.

Applications of ingredients in oral care

The main applications where oral care ingredients are found are in toothpaste and mouthwashes.

Toothpaste: These are homogeneous suspensions of solids in water, resulting in a creamy product with a semi-solid consistency that is easy to use with a toothbrush. In addition to providing cleaning through friction, removing plaque bacteria, they may also have specific activity to prevent or treat oral pathologies.

Toothpaste contains basic ingredients such as abrasive agents like silicas, humectants, surfactants, binders or thickeners, flavorings, and preservatives.

Mouthwashes: These aqueous or hydroalcoholic solutions are applied to the mucous membranes of the oral cavity to clean and refresh it. They are classified according to their alcohol content:

Alcohol-free: These are aqueous solutions usually containing fluoride, used as a supplementary source of fluoride after brushing to prevent cavities.

Low-alcohol content (Mouthwashes): These are used undiluted and contain active ingredients for antiseptic, anticaries, anti-plaque, healing, or desensitizing actions, although in lower concentrations than toothpaste.

These mouthwashes also include flavorings like menthol to provide a sensation of freshness in the mouth after use.

Our oral care ingredients
Name INCI Description
Sodium Gluconate Sodium gluconate Sodium gluconate is the sodium salt of gluconic acid, produced by the fermentation of glucose. The outstanding property of sodium gluconate is its excellent chelating power, especially in alkaline and concentrated alkaline solutions. It forms stable chelates with calcium, iron, copper, aluminum, and other heavy metals and, in this respect, surpasses all other chelating agents such as EDTA, NTA, and related compounds.
Sodium Lactate Sodium lactate Sodium lactate is the sodium salt of L(+)-lactic acid, obtained by neutralizing the acid of natural origin with a high purity sodium source. Sodium lactate has a high water retention capacity for personal care use.
Zinc Lactate Zinc lactate Zinc lactate dihydrate is produced by the complete neutralization of lactic acid with a high purity zinc source and subsequent crystallization. Due to the antimicrobial properties of the Zinc ion, it is used in oral care applications. Zinc lactate reduces and controls plaque in oral care products.
Zinc Citrate Zinc Citrate Zinc citrate is available as a dihydrate and trihydrate and is produced by the complete neutralization of citric acid with a high purity zinc source, followed by precipitation and dehydration. Due to the antimicrobial properties of the Zinc ion, it is used in oral care applications. Zinc citrate reduces and controls plaque in oral care products.
α-Bisabolol Bisabolol Plant extract with soothing and healing properties.
Beauté by Roquette® PO 500 Isosorbide This unique solution of extremely pure isosorbide approved by COSMOS acts as a strong humectant and moisturizing agent, providing long-lasting hydration to the skin or hair. It has an ISO 16128 natural index of 1.
Allantoin Allantoin Ingredient with great moisturizing power, which has soothing properties.
Menthol Menthol Substance derived from mint that causes a cooling sensation on the skin.
AquaJuve™ Sodium hyaluronate From ultra-low molecular weight (3000 Da) to high molecular weight, sodium hyaluronate is a mucopolysaccharide produced by fully natural fermentation and physical purification processes. In human tissue, hyaluronic acid is part of the extracellular matrix and serves many different functions: it retains water and serves as a natural lubricant, is a natural moisturizer for the skin ensuring its elasticity and moisture retention properties. It is widely used in anti-aging and moisturizing products.
Erylite® Erythritol Polyol produced by natural fermentation, with excellent moisturizing properties. Erythritol can be effectively used in dental health products as a xylitol substitute and functions as a sweetener. Ingredient that provides excellent non-cariogenic properties. In addition to positively influencing oral microbiome, Erythritol can promote remineralization by forming complexes with calcium ions.
Panthenol Panthenol It is a derivative of vitamin B5, an ingredient with moisturizing and anti-inflammatory properties.
Eureco™ HC Phtalamido-Peroxy-Caproic Acid Bleaching agent based on PAP (6-phthalimido-peroxy-hexanoic acid)
Arginine Arginine Amino acid used as an anti-plaque agent in dental formulations and as a neutralizer to adjust pH.
Zeodent® Silica Abrasive agent providing cleaning in toothpaste formulations.
