Anti-Dandruff Actives

Anti-dandruff actives

Dandruff is a scalp condition that causes excessive flaking, resulting in the shedding of cells from the stratum corneum layer. The formation of flakes on the scalp is known as dandruff and affects many people. Although its incidence decreases with age, dandruff is a common concern that can be addressed through cosmetics. The unsightly effect of dandruff justifies the search for new treatments that achieve its complete elimination. Thanks to advances in cosmetic research, we have a variety of anti-dandruff actives designed to combat this issue.

Types of dandruff

Dry dandruff: This is the most common flaky state, and it can evolve into greasy dandruff or disappear spontaneously. It manifests with fine, dry scales that are easily detachable and cover almost the entire scalp area. The scalp shows signs of dryness, and the hair lacks luster.

Greasy dandruff: This is a flaky state associated with the presence of seborrhea. The scales are larger and are mainly located in the frontal scalp area, which corresponds to the most seborrheic zone. It may be accompanied by erythema and varying degrees of itching, and scalp inflammation is common.

What are anti-dandruff actives?

The formation of dandruff can result from a multifactorial process. Therefore, anti-dandruff actives are aimed at individually addressing each of the causes that may lead to its occurrence and alleviating its consequences.

Highlighted properties/advantages

Antifungal: Anti-dandruff actives inhibit the proliferation of microorganisms, particularly targeting the yeast Malassezia furfur.

Antiseborrheic: Anti-dandruff actives are sebum regulators, controlling sebum production, which contributes to the occurrence of oily dandruff.

Antipruritic: Anti-dandruff actives are soothing agents that provide immediate relief, calming the itching and irritation associated with dandruff processes.

Common uses

To control dandruff, it is recommended to use an anti-dandruff shampoo regularly. Anti-dandruff shampoos, in addition to including anti-dandruff active ingredients, cleanse and respect the scalp with gentle ingredients and an appropriate pH.

Scalp lotions are one of the most commonly used cosmetic forms in individuals with dandruff. They are formulas intended to regulate sebum overproduction, reduce itching, control scalp flaking, among other benefits.
