From a cosmetic standpoint, emollience refers to a particular state of the stratum corneum of the epidermis characterized by a certain softness and flexibility. Emollience also helps to smooth the skin's surface and reduce the depth of wrinkles. Lastly, cosmetic emollients lubricate the skin, reducing its roughness caused by the layer of dead skin cells.

What are emollients for cosmetics?

Emollients are compounds that have the ability to soften and smooth the skin by providing deep hydration and retaining moisture. These ingredients are essential in the manufacturing of beauty products that aim to improve the texture and appearance of the skin.

Key functions of emollients

Deep Hydration: Emollients create a protective layer on the skin, preventing water loss through evaporation, thus increasing skin hydration and contributing to its flexibility.

Prevention of Dryness: Emollients are ideal for preventing skin dryness, especially in dry climates or low-humidity environments where the skin is more prone to water loss through transepidermal evaporation.

Reduction of Roughness: Emollients soften rough and dry skin, improving its texture and providing a feeling of comfort and well-being.

Improvement of Elasticity: By keeping the skin well hydrated, emollients can improve skin elasticity, which is beneficial for preventing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Types of emollients

Hydrophilic or Humectant Emollients: These are characterized by their moisturizing action. Examples include polyethylene glycols, glycerin, propylene glycol, and sorbitol, among others.

Lipophilic Emollients: These are characterized by their ability to retain water in the epidermis, preventing its evaporation and keeping the skin hydrated. Examples include esters, waxes, vegetable oils, triglycerides, among others.

Silicones: Silicones belong to the group of synthetic emollients and are used to create a silky sensation on the skin while avoiding the greasy feel that other emollients might leave behind.
