Sebum regulators
Sebum is an oily substance composed of fats, waxes, and squalene, produced by the skin's sebaceous glands to keep it hydrated and protected. Sebum helps retain moisture in the skin, keeping it hydrated and supple. Additionally, it is slightly acidic, so it can combat potential pathogens and prevent them from penetrating the skin. Sebum production varies depending on hormonal changes related to age and lifestyle factors. Overproduction of sebum leads to oily skin with enlarged pores, shinier skin, and susceptibility to acne formation. Seboregulatory actives are ingredients capable of controlling sebum production and preventing some skin problems. They also act on the scalp, making them especially effective in cosmetics for oily hair.
Seboregulatory actives are a group of cosmetic ingredients whose main goal is to balance the sebum production of the skin.
Oil control: One of the most prominent advantages of seboregulatory actives is their ability to reduce sebum production. In hair care, the use of seboregulatory actives results in deeper and longer-lasting cleansing, particularly for oily hair types. For the skin, seboregulatory actives lead to a decrease in facial shine and excess oil, resulting in a more matte and even complexion.
Acne prevention: By keeping pores clean and free from blockages, seboregulatory actives help prevent acne breakouts and reduce the likelihood of unwanted acne outbreaks.
Improved texture: Regular use of cosmetics containing seboregulatory actives can lead to softer skin with a more uniform texture. This translates to a smoother feel and an overall enhanced appearance.
Skin balance: Seboregulatory actives work to restore the skin’s natural balance. This can help reduce irritation and inflammation, providing a sense of well-being to the skin.
The use of seboregulatory actives in cosmetics extends to both skincare and hair care. Seboregulatory actives are commonly used in hair care products such as lotions for oily scalp or shampoos for oily hair. Additionally, seboregulatory actives are employed in facial skincare products such as cleansers, lotions, toners, creams, or masks that aim to balance sebum and improve the appearance of oily skin.
